A Study on Determination of Suitable Germination Temperature in Safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.)

Abstract


This research was carried out in Ondokuz Mayıs University, Faculty of Agriculture, Department of Field Crops under laboratory conditions. Two safflower cultivars named Balci and Dinçer were used as material. In the study, eight germination temperatures of 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, 28, 32 and 36°C were applied at 4°C intervals. The result of the research showed that the germination rate of both varieties was affected significantly by temperatures, the overall mean germination rate was determined as 56.1%. When evaluated in terms of variety; germination rate was 58.7% for Balcı and 53.6% for Dinçer. When evaluated in terms of germination temperature; germination rate ranged from 35.3% to 71.7%, the highest germination rate was obtained at 16°C. Variety × germination temperature is evaluated in terms of interaction; highest germination rate of 76.2% with 16°C germination temperature was obtained from Balcı variety. In addition, the relationship between germination temperature and germination rate is very important was determined. As a result; It was concluded that germination rate increased when temperature increased up to 16°C and germination rate decreased at germination temperatures higher than 16°C.
